Deborah Root: Bringing the War Home

Blizzmax Gallery presents Bringing the War Home, a show of work by Deborah Root, on now until August 6th.

Deborah Root teaches art history at the Ontario College of Art and postcolonial theory in the Faculty of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the University of Toronto. Her work explores, as she puts it, “the radical possibilities of figurative painting, and various ways meaning can operate at a less conscious level than in written language,” delving into personal and social narratives representing the dissonance that is part of memory and consciousness. “It is this slippage of meaning I endeavour to provoke.”

Her recent work explores tourism and the juxtaposition of the experience of the tourist within the vacation spot, versus their memories of it afterwards. She often places herself in the image to remind the viewer that what is being represented is her experience and fragmented memories.

Blizzmax Gallery is open by chance or by appointment. 3071 County Road 13 in South Bay.
