Renee Lortie is a textile artist currently working at the intersection of art, craft and design. Her intention as an artist is to create a visual, tactile, and emotional experience for the viewer by thoughtfully weaving and stitching meaning with texture and colour.
She creates contemporary art using the old world crafting techniques of weaving and punch needle rug making. Her work is an uncommon fresh approach, pushing the boundaries of what is commonly understood to be textile art. She uses natural fibres, often hand dyeing and spinning them for each piece.
Renee has recently gone from doing representational landscape work to more of an abstract direction. She takes inspiration from her materials (hand dyed natural fibres and cloth) beginning with one which leads to the next. In other words, her work is entirely intuitive. “I love the experience of exploring colour and texture, allowing how they relate to each other to dictate the direction of each piece.”
Renee lives in beautiful Prince Edward County and works in her home studio in South Bay. Her background in design definitely informs her art with mid century design elements making a regular appearance in her work. While she’s been making art in various mediums since 1985, she has discovered her passion in textile art.
