In Memory of Margaret McFetridge (1939-2023)
–
Margaret was born and raised in Toronto, but lived in many different places in Ontario, as well Quebec for ten years. She participated in many art shows and auctions at the Burlington Art Centre, the Hamilton Art Gallery and the Dundas Valley School of Art while she was a resident of Burlington, Ontario from 1979 until 1995. Her focus then was watercolour, silk and porcelain painting, and she discovered oils in 1994, falling in love with the luxuriousness of the medium.
Margaret is remembered fondly for her exuberant floral paintings bursting with colour, which many would describe as being joyous and ethereal. She grew almost every flower she painted, although she didn’t consider herself a gardener. Margaret welcomed art lovers to her 1880s shed in her garden from May to October for years, aptly named “The Bloomin’ Barn,” as well as year-round in her sun-filled studio. She felt fortunate to be able to paint every day, gradually working on larger and larger canvases.
A frequent participant in the Prince Edward County Studio Tour as well as a member of the Prince Edward County Arts Trail, Margaret’s paintings were housed in County landmarks such as The Merrill Inn in Picton and in buildings at Sandbanks Provincial Park. Her paintings are held in private collections in Canada, Europe and the United States.
