My muse is the natural world. I love the elusive quality of the landscape, the moving light, the mystery of what the eye sees. All this is stored somewhere subconsciously, together with images of years of canoe tripping through Ontario’s parks and rivers. My canvas typically goes through layers of paint, building up texture with palette knives and various mark-making tools until the final piece comes into its own – a very intuitive process.
The initial inspiration is the key to what evolves. I welcome challenges, often working with small en plein air studies, transferring those to larger canvases. I primarily use acrylic paints but also work with oil and cold wax medium. Attempting to interpret the natural world, creating work that evokes an emotional impact, is what intrigues and drives me.
