Garrett Gilbart, a sculptor from Douro, Ontario, transforms discarded industrial steel into intricate, organic forms. Using a handheld plasma cutter, they “carve” scrap metal into works that echo the delicate patterns of lichen, coral, and other natural growths. The sculptures explore the tension between industry and environment, fragility and strength—connecting the rust of machines to the iron in our own blood. Many pieces also incorporate sound, fitted with contact mics and theremin-like instruments that resonate with shifting tones, recalling seismic activity, electromagnetic interference, and the subtle crunch of lichen underfoot.
