The next two instalments of County Arts’ Public Art Workshop series are taking place this month at the County Arts Lab. Sponsored by the Prince Edward County Public Art Program, these FREE workshops are designed to prepare artists for upcoming public art commissions and open calls.
Community Engaged Public Art with Hannah Doucet – Sunday, May 3rd, 2026, 1-5 PM
Join artist Hannah Doucet to understand processes and approaches to creating community engaged public artworks, and to navigate crafting thoughtful and meaningful projects to undertake with communities that provide space for a wide range of voices and experiences.
This workshop will cover:
– Examples and descriptions of engaging community based public art works, from small-scale temporary installations, to murals, to digital works, to permanent public artworks.
– Discussions of engagement and community impact
– Best practices for working within community
– Case studies and group discussion on creative ways to approach projects
There will be a hands-on art making activity, co-creation of a simple quilt project in order to learn about the process of making work as a collective while celebrating individual voices, and bringing them together as a whole – no sewing experience needed.
Murals: From Concept to Wall with Jamie Janx Johnston – Saturday, May 9th, 2026, 1-5 PM
In this hands-on workshop, join artist Jamie Janx Johnston to learn all about murals from the design process to the final wall. Jamie will define the various roles and complexities in the world of mural production. Participants will acquire the problem solving skills to address every angle of mural production, including a hands-on site evaluation component in small groups.
This workshop will cover:
– Wall evaluation, including common challenges and solutions
– Techniques and best practices for prepping a wall
– Materials selection and considerations, including overviews of spray paint and exterior latex or oil-based paint and when each would be used
– Understanding sketching techniques for varied surfaces
– Overview of equipment commonly used, such as ladders, scissor lifts, cherry pickers and scaffolding, discussion of safety considerations
– Techniques for scaling your work
– The importance of documentation
– Budgeting, how to calculate materials cost, accounting for insurance, production time and other considerations
