Guildworks presents Place of Becoming, an installation of eight highly marked and textured ceramic figures by renowned and celebrated Canadian sculptor, Susan Low-Beer.
Each figure, approximately 36″ by 14″, is suspended by wire from the beams of the tasting room at Closson Chase Vineyards and hung overhead, almost in motion, embodying the quality of being independent of fate or necessity. The surface of each form, cells, blood, muscles, and energy, convey the internal language of the body. A postcard from the Knossos Palace in Crete of a bull leaper, was the impetus for this work.
Susan Low-Beer has exhibited internationally and nationally and is represented in the collections of the Museum of Civilization in Ottawa, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the National Museum of Modern Art in Japan, the Mint Museum of Craft and Design in North Carolina, as well as other museums and private collections in Canada, the United States, Europe and Japan. In 1999 Susan received the Saidye Bronfman Award for Excellence and in 2000 was inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Art.
