Music at Port Milford: Romanceros

Artscene August 2024 Edition

For three decades, Canadian Opera Company concertmaster Marie Berard, musical polymath Rohan Gregory, and National Ballet cellist Paul Widner have collaborated as the Port Milford Chamber Players.

This summer, they are joined by two former Music at Port Milford students: Vancouver Symphony Orchestra principal violist Emilie Grimes and New York-based pianist Charlotte Hill. “Romanceros” takes its name from the subjects of Gabriella Lena Frank’s musical melting pot, Leyendas. It nods to the other works of love on the program: Schubert’s Quartetsatz and Schumann’s Piano Trio in D Minor.

With this concert and title, MPM celebrates the memory of the kind, gentle, and ever romantic Dr. Arthur Cole, a founding Board member and dear friend of MPM. In honour of Dr. Cole’s adored and adoring wife of 28 years, Judy Cole, the MPM season will close with Borodin’s String Quartet No. 2, written for the composer’s wife on the occasion of their twentieth wedding anniversary.
