Georgia Papanicolaou is a veteran of the local community theatre scene. She grew up in the County, and after studying at Queen’s University and receiving a Directing Intensive certificate from Theatre Ontario, she returned home to co-found Shatterbox Theatre in 2017. As an award-winning director and actor with stage credits in edgy shows like God of Carnage and The Rocky Horror Show, Georgia likes to push the boundaries. “I want to produce work that engages peoples’ minds and starts a conversation. There’s a misconception about what theatre looks like in a rural setting, that you can’t produce these kinds of works in a small town. Can’t isn’t in my vocabulary, nor should it ever be. We can present new and exciting contemporary work just like they do in bigger cities. There is no reason why we shouldn’t. There are many incredible and important stories to tell and our community should have access to these works of art regardless of where they live.”

We are pleased to support Georgia through our new Artist Residency Program. For the month of March, she will use a 550 square foot space in The Armoury as her own private rehearsal hall. Having access to a dedicated space will allow her to work on a brand new original play entitled Parlor Talk, written by Shatterbox co-founder Sam Branderhorst. She will also workshop, rehearse, and experiment with equipment and online technologies in order to launch two new theatrical projects later this year.

One of the projects is titled Shattercast: Engaging Minds in Uncertain Times. This triptych series of video episodes will comprise both original and pre-existing theatrical and musical work to showcase Shatterbox artists of all ages, while exploring topics such as mental health, social justice, and education. Georgia will mentor three young actors to perform monologues for the series, culminating in online behind-the-scenes material and an online-accessible performance. Stay tuned!
