Craftivism
The Department of Illumination’s Craftivism Club is hosted by Nell Casson and Bill Stearman

This winter, The Department of Illumination invites you to join Craftivism, a FREE workshop series funded by County Arts‘ Artist in the Community grant.

Taking place at The Department of Illumination Studio, participants will help create a series of large fabric banners with activist themes. Workshops will be co-hosted by lead artist Nell Casson, and supported by Bill Stearman, longtime activist and award-winning quilter. Each banner will highlight a social issue in our community, such as: poverty, climate change, feminism, equality, capitalism, or any other cause chosen by the participants. The artists will give an overview of the historical intersection of craft and activism, and help shape the messages into effective designs. The banners will be created using a variety of media and techniques allowing the artists to share their skills in embroidery, quilting, painting and collage. The banners will be completed collaboratively, allowing participants to make their mark on one or many of the banners.

Mondays and Wednesdays, 4 to 6 PM: February 26th, 28th, March 4th, 6th, 11th, 13th, 18th, 20th, 25th and 27th.
