Canadian Author JC Sulzenko’s poetry has appeared on Arc’s Poem of the Year shortlist, in anthologies and in journals, in print and online, either under her name or as A. Garnett Weiss, the pseudonym she uses when writing centos and found poems. Her cento, “For our many moods, there is nothing like a lantern,” won First Prize for Poetry in the 2023 Wind & Water Writing Contest (Prince Edward County Arts Council). This fall, she is delighted to work with County Arts on two programs: an October workshop embracing collage and found poetry, “Between Beauty and Loss”; and offering poetry mentorship in the community.
In 2022, her work appeared in releases from Public Poetry (Houston), Hidden Brooks Press, Poetry Super Highway, Silver Birch Press, and at the Puppets Up! International Festival in Almonte, Ontario. She read online for The Poets Corner (Maine). That year, Bricolage: A Gathering of Centos was among 5 finalists for the national Fred Kerner Award from the Canadian Authors Association.
In 2021, her cento figured in The Art of Conversation virtual exhibition, and in 2020 her poems appeared in Vallum: Contemporary Poetry, Naugatuck River Review, The Light Ekphrastic, and the Poetry Leaves anthology. Her cento won First Prize for Poetry in the inaugural Wind & Water Writing Contest in 2019. That same year JC also won the WrEN award (Children’s Poetry), and she judged poetry for the National Capital Writing Contest.
In 2018, Another Dysfunctional Cancer Poem Anthology, the Poet’s Pathway and County CollAboRaTive projects featured her work. Point Petre Publishing released JC’s debut collection, South Shore Suite…POEMS in 2017. She curated poetry for the exhibition and chapbook Ekphrasis at Blizzmax Gallery in 2016.
JC has published 6 books for children and families and a play about dementia. She co-authored two poetry chapbooks with Carol A. Stephen, Slant of Light and Breathing Mutable Air. JC has led workshops for the Ottawa International Writers Festival, the Canadian Authors Association, the Griffin Trio, the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, the Ottawa Public Library, and a number of Alzheimer societies, among others. For more than a decade, she judged English language poetry entries in the Ottawa Public Library’s Awesome Authors Contest.
JC founded and curated the Glebe Report’s “Poetry Quarter” (2015-2023). She writes poetry on commission (Bespoke Poetry, Poetry to Go). A full member of The League of Canadian Poets, she serves as a selector for the online journal bywords.ca and as a member-at-large on the Ontario Poetry Society Board.
