Specializing in portraiture, figurative work and printmaking, Jan Swaren received a degree in Art and Art History from McMaster University. She subsequently attended Queens Faculty of Education’s Artist in Community Education (ACE) program in Visual Arts and Writing.
With her studies completed, Jan embarked on an extended period of travel, one that enabled her to see the work of great artists throughout Europe.
After returning to Canada, Jan worked in the near north, the Maritimes, the Prairies and in Ontario, teaching and facilitating art therapy groups. Landing in a new community and making it home is a skill Jan learned while growing up on Canadian Air Force bases in Canada and abroad.
Jan moved from Nova Scotia to Picton in 2024 to be near her children and grandchildren. Currently, Jan provides art therapy sessions, is an active member of The Andrew, and serves on the board of the Department of Illumination. She recently became a member of Arts on Main Gallery.
Jan has exhibited in numerous juried, invitational and open shows, has won prizes and has work in private and public collections across Canada. She promotes the arts wherever she lives.
Jan works in oils, watercolours, acrylics and inks and is currently exploring themes of healing and community through portraiture, landscape and sacred geometry (and sometimes a combination of all of these). She loves to explore texture, pattern, shape and colour.
