About The Department of Illumination

The Department of Illumination weaves creativity into the fabric of our community, bringing people together for shared experiences of wonder and joy. We strive to be a cultural leader, demonstrating excellence and innovation in community arts. Our projects embrace a diverse range of artistic disciplines including puppetry, dance, music, processions, visual art, public art, installation, costuming and textiles.

There are some common threads that run through our work. These include embracing a quirky and handmade aesthetic, working collaboratively, staging art in public spaces, creating accessible opportunities for the community to engage with and create art, the use of recycled materials, and providing meaningful work for professional artists and performers in Prince Edward County through the production of community arts events such as workshops, festivals and temporary public art installations.

Our events and programs are for all people regardless of age, race, gender, sexuality, socio-economic background or level of experience. With the goal of creating space for artists, volunteers and participants to express themselves and feel a sense of belonging within the arts community.
