Writing Contest Winners
Our 5th annual Wind & Water Writing Contest saw the most entries out of any year!

The interest and caliber of submissions in the 5th anniversary edition of our annual Wind & Water Writing Contest was outstanding! Since 2019, we’ve had a total of 163 entrants and 213 submissions. In 2023, we received the highest number of entries in Wind & Water history!

Here are the 2023 Wind & Water Writing Contest Winners:

Fiction and Non-Fiction

Winner: The Farmers’ Almanac (Fiction) – Dawn Miller

Judges’ comments about the winning submission: “An atmospheric, tense read that seamlessly connects the building of literal and metaphorical storms, this is a well-crafted story that had us hooked from the very beginning.”

Honourable Mention: Haggler (Fiction) – Adam Cavanaugh

Poetry

Winner: For our many moods, there is nothing like a lantern – A. Garnett Weiss

Judges’ comments about the winning submission: “This cento captured this year’s theme in both form and content, offering a moving depiction of the poetic ties that connect one person to another.”

Honourable Mention: Castlefield Avenue Summer, 1953 – Lorne Singer

We want to extend a big congratulations to the winners, including those who made it onto the longlist and shortlist, and we sincerely thank all who submitted to the contest this year.
