As we mark the inaugural National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (September 30), we would like to invite you to join us on the 2021 Walk for Wenjack.
We have formed the County Arts Walk team in support of the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Foundation, an Indigenous-led organization aiming to continue the conversation that began with Chanie Wenjack’s residential school story and to support reconciliation through a combination of awareness, education and action. Our team members will be together in spirit, but will walk individually on their own time ideally between October 17-22. Click here to help us meet our $1000 target by making a donation or joining our virtual walking team.
As an arts service organization, we are committed to the support and advancement of Indigenous artists in Prince Edward County and beyond. We recognize that the first step towards reconciliation is learning. Over the last year, our staff and Board have read the 94 Calls to Action proposed by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. As part of our Indigenous reconciliation and cultural competency training we read 21 Things You May Not Know About the Indian Act by Bob Joseph, which we highly recommend. We have also been exchanging ideas and learning from Indigenous individuals both near and far. This work is ongoing, and will take on many forms. Through this continual process of learning and sharing, we will work to identify our unique role, and take meaningful actions, in support of reconciliation and healing.
