Artscene April 2024 Edition

Spring at Oeno Gallery
6 Variations Relief, Yvonne Lammerich, Wood, Gouache Foamcore, 1979, 49 × 43 in

Oeno Gallery welcomes spring with Now and Then: An Unfolding — a survey show of Canadian Artist Yvonne Lammerich’s work from 1972 to 2021. For more than five decades, Yvonne Lammerich’s evocative contemporary artwork has explored the human journey and challenged our perceptions of how we occupy space and time.

Lammerich’s innovative and impressive portfolio has been an ‘unfolding’—an investigation of alternative outlooks through an artistic lens. This solo exhibition includes paintings and works on paper that offer a fresh, and imaginative perspective of our collective experience. Lammerich thinks of herself as a ‘visual philosopher’ and her visual style is both non-representational–abstracted and cross-cultural. She embraces a worldview that pays homage to the past, and resides in the present as a ‘witness to the moment’ in which she lives.

Yvonne Lammerich has shown nationally and internationally since 1973. Her work is included in museums as well as corporate and private collections. Born in Germany, her studio practice has been based in France, Montreal, Toronto, and currently in Prince Edward County.

On exhibition from April 6th — May 5th, 2024. Opening Reception with the Artist present — Saturday, April 6th from 2-4 PM. There will also be an Artist Talk with Yvonne Lammerich on Thursday, April 25th from 5:30-6:30 PM. All are welcome to attend.

Following the Opening Reception from 5-6 PM, The MSF Trio will perform a jazz concert. Seats are limited and must be reserved ahead of time by calling the Gallery at 613-393-2216 to reserve your seat. The MSF Trio is comprised of David Mott (baritone saxophone), Jesse Stewart (percussion) and Ben Finley (bass).

David Mott (Professor Emeritus, Music at York University) is a saxophonist and composer whose work draws on western art music and jazz traditions as well as the musical styles of Asia and Eastern Europe. Well-known for his solo performances, he has also collaborated with many renowned artists. He performs with concert accordionist Joseph Petric as the duo Erosonic.

Jesse Stewart (Professor, Head of Music at Carleton University) is an award-winning composer, percussionist, visual artist, researcher, and educator. He has performed and/or recorded with many musical luminaries, and his music has been featured at festivals throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe.

Ben Finley is a collaborative and solo performer-composer, singer, improviser, and writer grounded in creative acoustic and electric bass playing. He leads and co-leads several ensembles that cross compositional boundaries, drawing inspiration from chamber music, song forms, improvisational music making, electronics and the sound worlds of local environments. Ben is the co-founder and creative director of the Westben Centre for Connection & Creativity’s Performer-Composer Residency.

Spring is also the perfect time to visit the Gallery’s Sculpture Garden, with work by over 60 sculptors from Canada and the United States. The Sculpture Garden is open daily from dawn until dusk.
