The Reconciliation Reading Group is an ongoing project to promote informed action toward Reconciliation. This is a free-of-charge community event jointly sponsored and hosted by County Museums and The Prince Edward County Public Library.
For the second meeting of the Reading Group, participants will discuss Bob Joseph’s “21 Things You May Not Know About the Indian Act,” described as “the essential guide to understanding the Indian Act and its repercussions on generations of Indigenous Peoples.”
From its first passage in 1876, through numerous amendments up until this very day, the Indian Act “continues to touch on every aspect of an Indian person’s life, from the womb to the tomb.” The book reviews 21 of the Indian Act’s most burdensome “rules, regulations, and prohibitions”, briefly detailing the oppressive results both historic and contemporary. The book argues for the Indian Acts’s dismantling and replacement.
All are welcome to join us at the Bloomfield Branch Library (300 Main Street, Bloomfield) on September 24th, 2025 from 6:30 – 8:30 PM. Ideally participants will have read the book.
This month’s discussion is co-facilitated by Jessica Chase and Liz Zylstra.
