As part of the new PEC Pride Programming Partnership, Base31 is hosting several events spotlighting 2SLGBTQIA+ creators and performers. PEC Pride was created by a collective of queer-owned and allied arts and entertainment businesses who have created programming to celebrate Pride in Prince Edward County during the month of June 2024. On June 7th, Shawnee Kish brings her powerful soul voice to the Sergeants Mess Hall. Shawnee’s journey in music has been one that she attributes to her strength, survival, and inspiration during her struggle coming out as Two Spirit and her struggle with depression as a child.

The Mohawk singer-songwriter from Canada was a 2022 JUNO nominee for Contemporary Indigenous Artist of the Year, tied to her acclaimed self-titled debut EP. In 2023, she released her highly anticipated follow-up EP, Revolution, which landed her another Two JUNO nominations in Adult Alternative Album Of The Year, and Contemporary Indigenous Artist Of The Year.

On June 8th, experience award-winning trans artist, Lynx Dean, leader of the legendary queer band, Random Order. Lynx began his on stage career at a young age reciting books of the bible in a cult. It didn’t take very long for him to jump that ship to form his own band Random Order, who traveled the world, performing at countless pride shows across the globe from Europride Stockholm to Scotland Pride and Toronto’s World Pride. Random Order produces high octane energy music that induces audiences to feel a sense of belonging, with a “be who you are” attitude!

Later on June 8th, Carole Pope performs at the Sergeants Mess Hall in a show that is not to be missed. An agent provocateur pushing the boundaries of sexuality, sexual politics, and the status quo, making you think and dance at the same time, Carole’s work has been recognized with three JUNO Awards, multiple independent music awards, a Genie Award. 4 gold, 1 platinum and 1 double platinum album.

Pope’s lyrics and live performance was a clarion call to arms for a revolution that helped to pave the way for future Canadian female artists (gay and hetero) including Peaches, Tegan & Sara and k.d. Lang, while becoming a worldwide cult influence on artists from Madonna to Lady Gaga to David Bowie.
