Join landscape architect Victoria Taylor to understand and discuss the essential technical requirements for public art installation. Participants will gain a practical understanding of how to structurally support freestanding artworks without wall supports, as well as how to ensure these installations are safe and accessible to the public. This is a free event to help prepare artists to respond to future calls through the Municipality’s Public Art Program.
This workshop will cover:
– How to know if your artwork needs structural support / structural engineering review.
– Review of common, approved materials for structural support (concrete, wood, steel and rammed earth) and how to effectively collaborate with construction trades outside of your art practice
– Drawing examples of structural footings to meet local building code.
– Relevant sections of the Ontario Building Code, the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act’s Design for Public Space Standard, and local zoning by law
– PEng stamps and when are they required
– Key elements to consider when siting your artwork in public space, such as: the County’s Tree Protection Policy, general environmental considerations, public access points, connections to other green spaces
