A Nye of Pheasants
A Nye of Pheasants by Steve Burrows

On Saturday May 18, the Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory (PEPtBO) will hold the County launch of Steve Burrows’ 8th book in the ‘Birder Murder’ series, A Nye of Pheasants, published by Point Blank.

“The holiday weekend during spring migration offers the perfect opportunity to welcome Steve Burrows with an event that celebrates the North American release of his new mystery. A detective whose passions for solving crimes and for birds compete in each novel—that’s a combination irresistible to us,” says Julie White, President of PEPtBO.

“Birding and crime detection share common skill sets: the ability to observe a situation, not dive right in; paying attention to detail, such as to plumage or appearance, and to behaviour. Often, there’s just a flash of a bird seen. Perhaps there might be enough to determine what species flew by. But to reach a conclusion means gathering more information and adding up the clues,” Steve explains.

Oshawa-based Burrows has many fans among County readers. An accomplished environmental journalist, world traveller and birder, he first wrote about his Canadian detective, DCI Domenic Jejeune, in 2012. Publishing deals in Canada and the United Kingdom followed. Co-producers Shaftesbury Films in Canada (Murdoch Mysteries) and Company Pictures (Inspector George Gently) in the UK now have the ‘Birder Murder’ series under active consideration. A 9th book will be published in 2025.

This fundraiser for PEPtBO begins at 2:30 PM on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at South Bay United Church, 2029 County Road 13, Milford. The event features Steve’s reading from A Nye of Pheasants, a discussion moderated by County 99.3 FM’s Lynn Pickering (The County Writes…The County Reads), and time for Q&As. Refreshments in the Church Hall follow the program when Steve will be on hand to sign copies of the book, available on site from Books & Company. Tickets are required and can be purchased as of April 10 at www.peptbo.ca for $20.00 each. For event information, email Cristina Petrucci at comms@peptbo.ca
